School for International Training (SIT) programs are developed around a framework of the most Critical Global Issues of our time—challenges that transcend borders and touch every human on the planet. We have developed this framework so that the next generation of leaders has the expertise and intercultural understanding to engage all identities, perspectives, and cultures with respectful, enduring, and meaningful responses.
During the Fall 2020 semester, SIT is hosting Critical Conversations, a webinar series designed to inspire community-wide dialogue on these global, interdisciplinary topics. The semester-long series will bring together our faculty, staff, and alumni around the world for a variety of virtual events. These issues cannot wait—please join us, connect with the greater SIT community, and help us move these conversations forward.
WEBINAR SERIES AGENDA & REGISTRATION BELOW!
Faculty Lecture Series – Kick off each week with a lecture where we will introduce the Critical Global Issue for the week. The lecture will draw on expertise and perspectives from the Global South and will be moderated by Academic Dean Dr. Cheikh Thiam and Dean of Faculty Dr. Said Graiouid. Prior to the lecture, we encourage you to check out the resource guide below for extra ways to immerse yourself in the week's topics.
Open House – Tour our programs from the comfort of your home! Each week we will feature one SIT program within the week's Critical Global Issue. The virtual site visit will allow you to learn about the program firsthand from our on-site directors, faculty members, and staff.
Admissions Webinar – Meet our admissions counselors who will provide you with details about the admissions process, course options, upcoming changes, and more. Admissions counselors will be available to answer any questions you may have about programs related to the week's Critical Global Issue.
Alumni Spotlight – Get to know our network! These sessions will highlight our alumni from SIT Study Abroad, International Honors Program, and SIT Graduate Institute. They may include research presentations, career panel discussions, and videos from alumni who participated in programs within the Critical Global Issue of the week.
Special Topics Session – Broaden your knowledge on matters related to international education and study abroad. We will host a session each week on a topic outside of the Critical Global Issues, such as Scholarships & Financial Aid, Careers in International Education, The Future of Study Abroad, and more.

Perspectives from the Global South: Public Health, Pandemics, & Social Equity

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought back to light the intricate relationship between equitable access to goods and services, and the historical disparities embedded in structural inequalities. This is particularly true in public health, where historically disenfranchised communities and countries have struggled to have access to decent health care. This panel will examine the effects of the pandemic on social equity and access to public health outside of the Global North with a strong focus on alternative models that have transcended class lines. The panelists will also examine the conceptual frameworks that have shaped discourse on access and equity, to develop ways to operationalize the democratization of access to good health care.

The global pandemic has changed the way that higher education institutions view study abroad. Perspectives from the Global South: Race, Human Trafficking, and Modern Slavery

Five hundred years after the transatlantic slave trade, the provision and obtainment of human beings for sex or labor remains prevalent. Today, "trafficked people," as the World Health Organization defines them, may be forced to work as beggars or soldiers, or may be made to serve as "wives," in the case of women and children. Human trafficking is thus a big and diverse business, and may, rightly, be considered part of the backlash against decolonizing forces, as well as the inevitable byproduct of late-stage, global capitalism. This panel will engage the controversial and painful topic of modern slavery, particularly the correlation between human trafficking and race.

In the wake of Black Lives Matter, Rhodes Must Fall, and the Arab Spring, there is the possibility of a new social contract that holds these truths to be self-evident: that contemporary social, economic, and political realities are rooted less in the very structures of the modern state, and more that explain and legitimate its fundamental structures. These histories are, in most instances, rooted in exploitative capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy as they have led to various types of slavery, segregations, and genocides. This panel engages with the ways in which communities, nation-states, and individuals from the Global South use "memory spaces" to explain inequality, shape discourses on transitional justice, reframe power dynamics, and create dynamic spaces that promise a more equitable future.

Participating in an SIT Study Abroad program can be the highlight of a student's undergraduate experience. But cost can sometimes seem overwhelming at first glance. Perspectives from the Global South: Education, Democracy, and Equity after COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the intricate inequality that characterizes local and global access to education. While billions of children in much of the Global South have limited access to quality education, their peers from more privileged backgrounds are offered unprecedented opportunities. This situation risks further exacerbation as the economic effects of the pandemic hamper education funding, especially for vulnerable communities. In parallel, the pandemic has shown potential for unprecedented innovation in the education sector and has showcased the resilience of communities. From the perspectives of the Global South, this panel will look at the challenges of equality and the possibilities of a promising future in a post COVID-19 world, with a strong focus on education, equity, and sustainability within modern democracies.
