An open society is the foundation of a peaceful world

Following is a statement from School for International Training President Sophia Howlett in response to the June 26, 2018, U.S. Supreme Court Ruling upholding the Trump administration’s ban on visas for people from Muslim-majority and other countries:
Yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision caps 16 months marked by uncertainty for Muslims and many others in the United States, as well as for those seeking to travel and study here. For more than 50 years, School for International Training has dedicated itself to creating and expanding an open, democratic, and multicultural society. We believe that such a society is the foundation of a just and peaceful world.
Through our study abroad and graduate programs, SIT delivers experiential education that challenges our students, from wherever they come, to form a respectful and supportive community together and to think critically about the world and its future. Our students learn from each other, our international faculty, and from other cultures to become engaged, responsible, and globally competent citizens. This is possible only when our campuses and student groups reflect a society that is diverse and inclusive.
It is from the free exchange of ideas and worldviews that we all learn, grow, and build a sustainable and better world.
