Gifts of Stock

Gifts of appreciated securities–stock, bonds, and mutual fund shares–held for 12 months or longer entitles you to a charitable deduction for the fair-market value of the donated asset, and you can avoid paying capital gains tax. Making the transfer is simple:

Transferring Stock from a Brokerage Account

If your stock is held in a brokerage account, you may transfer funds in two ways. You can send a letter of instruction to your broker or banker with a full description of the securities and your gift’s intended purpose. Or, have your broker send your securities electronically using the following instructions:

Donating Stock Certificates You Hold

Send the unsigned certificates, preferably by certified mail, to:

Copy and send World Learning Inc. one blank stock power for each company whose stock you are transferring. Only the signature line should be filled in, with the signature(s) matching the name(s) that appear on the face of the certificates, or both names if the stock is jointly owned. An officer of a commercial bank must guarantee the owner’s signature. Send the certificates and stock powers in separate envelopes. Send the signed stock power in one and the stock certificate(s) in the other with a letter (also signed by the owner(s) of the stock) stating that the stock is being donated to World Learning Inc.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable account, sponsored by a public charity, which you can use to support World Learning Inc. and our family of programs. Once you have established a DAF, there are several benefits:

  • You can recommend grants to World Learning Inc. and our programs.
  • Any investment growth is tax free to you.
  • You have the option of being acknowledged for your contribution or remaining anonymous.

Join the Infinity Club

Well-managed gift planning can increase the size of your estate, provide you with more current income, and allow you to give generously to World Learning Inc. today and in the future.

The Infinity Club is a special group of supporters who have included World Learning, The Experiment in International Living, SIT Study Abroad, International Honors Program, or SIT Graduate Institute in their estate plans. Infinity Club members are individuals and/or couples who have taken the following steps to provide for planned gifts of any size to World Learning Inc.:

  • informed World Learning Inc. of their plans to make a bequest to benefit World Learning through their will, living trust or estate plan
  • informed World Learning Inc. that they have designated in writing World Learning Inc. as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy
  • established a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust to benefit World Learning Inc.
  • made a gift of a paid-up or in-force life insurance policy with full ownership rights to World Learning Inc.
  • made a gift of personal residence or farm to World Learning Inc. with a retained life estate
  • made certain other gifts that may be recognized with Infinity Club membership

Matching Gifts

ne of the easiest ways to increase your gift to School for International Training is by giving it through your employer’s matching gift program. Many companies and organizations match employees’ charitable contributions—sometimes for as much as double the amount of the initial gift.

Contact your Human Resources office to find out if your organization matches employee donations. Obtain a matching gift form and review the program guidelines to ensure that School for International Training is eligible to receive the matching gift. Complete the donor section of the form and submit it, along with your check or credit card authorization, to:

Honor Someone

Express your support, respect, gratitude, or love for a special person in your life with a tribute gift to School for International Training. A charitable donation in lieu of a purchased gift is a lasting way to honor friends and family on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or holidays. Memorial donations are a thoughtful and caring way to express sympathy and help us make a global impact. If you wish, the individual you specify will receive a notification card of your thoughtfulness. The amount of your gift is not disclosed. To make a gift in honor or memorial of someone be sure to check the appropriate box on our online giving forms (SIT Study Abroad Giving Form, International Honors Program Giving Form, SIT Graduate Institute Giving Form) to signify whether your gift is in honor or in memory of someone.
