Raven E. Brown, PhD
Raven E. Brown is a political economist, policy scientist, and critical urbanist whose work focuses on inequality, neoliberalism, and the role of the state. Her research examines how policy regimes affect equal access to infrastructure, building democratic climate resiliency, and the outcomes of neoliberalism on the relationship between democracy and the social contract. She looks at how the neoliberal era has undermined the capacity of the state to provide for social well-being and how this has affected trust in institutions and governance.
Currently, Brown is a visiting scholar at NYU Gallatin’s Urban Democracy Lab where she delves into how policy can be used to develop urban climate resiliency without reproducing existing structures’ inequality and provide equal access to infrastructure. Brown’s work examines how conceptions of citizenship and the state need to be reevaluated to take climate migration into account and South-North policy diffusion. Brown has 20 years of experience working in international development, global public health, and policy research. She has worked in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the U.S. She is a member of the New York State Democratic County Committee, a dog lover, and a native New Yorker.
