Sophia Sanan, PhD Candidate

Sophia holds a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Freiburg in Germany, Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where she is currently reading for a PhD in sociology. She has an academic background in political philosophy, English literature, and visual communication design. Her published research has focused on art and design education for social justice, race and institutional transformation, cultural policy development in Africa, and socio-cultural dimensions of African diasporic communities in Europe, South Africa, and India. Sophia has worked as an educator, research consultant, and curriculum developer in arts, visual culture, and education, both internationally and in South Africa, for the last 10 years. She has developed and run a number of community-based art and design projects, which aligned experiential learning practice with social justice imperatives. She has taught and developed courses on visual culture, arts education, globalization, and design for social change at undergraduate and master’s levels. Sophia broadened her experience in South African civil society during her two years as research manager for an arts organization, during which time she worked on cultural policy consultancies in social and cultural entrepreneurship training and on public participation projects in the arts across Africa. Since 2016, she has played a few different roles with this program as traveling faculty, faculty coordinator, academic coordinator, and now program director. She is based in Cape Town, South Africa, where she lives with her partner and son.
