Brack Hale, PhD

Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Brack holds a PhD in land resources from Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison. When not working for SIT’s summer program in Iceland, he lives in Lugano Switzerland, where he is a full professor of biology and environmental science at Franklin University Switzerland and co-director of the Center for Sustainability Initiatives. His research interests have revolved around how humans interact with and impact the natural world and has included various projects examining biofuels, ecology and management of riparian areas, invasive species, natural areas conservation, sustainable travel and tourism, and waste management. His most recent research has used social media to track tourism in the Westfjords of Iceland as well as looking at university-level educational travel programs in the same region. In his free time, he enjoys botanizing, hiking, and skiing.
