A Statement in Solidarity with Ukraine from the CEO of World Learning and the President of SIT
Announcement Date: February 24, 2022
World Learning and School for International Training are profoundly saddened by the events unfolding in Ukraine. We are keenly aware of the many innocent people who will be directly impacted by this tragic situation, and what this will mean for the broader region and the world.
Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine will undoubtedly have grave humanitarian and economic consequences. After 30 years of post-Soviet independence and democracy-building, Ukraine’s young, dynamic society and the greater region once again are facing lives lost, a new wave of refugees, a dramatic increase in humanitarian needs, and destabilization of peace.
World Learning and School for International Training have a long history of education, development, and exchange programming in the region and the world. These programs aim to strengthen democratic processes and civic institutions and facilitate inclusive societies in which all voices can be heard. Our 90-year history is grounded in the mission to build a more peaceful and just world. The events unfolding today are diametrically opposed to all that we stand for and believe in.
While recent efforts at peace through diplomacy in Ukraine have fallen short, we know that our mission is essential and will ultimately prevail. Addressing complex issues through a framework of human connections and education is a peaceful and effective alternative to aggression. Current events are a sharp reminder of the importance and relevance of the work we do.
Today, we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine against acts of force and violence. For our part, we will continue to support and grow democracies that work to foster and empower peace and human dignity. We stand strong, resolved, and rededicated to our critical work to foster a more peaceful and just world.
