Examine crucial issues in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a moderate Arab state coming to terms with political responsibility, social change, and the effects of regional conflict.
Jordan has made enormous strides recently in health care, literacy, and democratic and economic reform. However, it remains challenged by a lack of natural resources, environmental concerns, economic and social issues, and the impact of Palestinian immigrants and refugees, who now make up more than half of the nation’s population. More recently, Iraqi refugees have been pouring into the country and changing the demographic and physical landscapes of the capital.
Based in the capital city of Amman, students conduct academic fieldwork within Jordan. A one-week visit to Egypt, conditions permitting, offers students additional regional insights.
In country resources and program partners generally include:
- Yarmouk University
- University of Jordan
- Ministry of Social Development
- Ministry of Political Development

Fall 2009 student, Zachary Mondesire from Columbia University, writes about his experience adjusting to Ramadan as he chose to join his host family in their religious tradition of fasting during the daylight hours of Ramadan. Read his article published in Columbia University’s Daily Spectator.

"Without a doubt, my years of study at Wheaton College could not have been harmonized better with any other program than the SIT Modernization and Social Change program in Amman, Jordan. Between the homestay, superior instructors, and overall experience SIT Study Abroad showed itself to be on the top of its field."
