Explore the internal dynamics and processes at work in post-conflict societies. Special attention is given to gender and its role in civil society and conflict transformation.
Through thematic lectures and seminars, complemented by site visits and program excursions, students experience various aspects of the far-reaching changes, particularly peacebuilding, taking place in Balkan societies. Students gain a theoretical framework and increased knowledge to better examine post-conflict transformation in the context of this region. Through meaningful stays with host families and diverse excursions in both Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, students are immersed in the Balkans' cultural and social environment and experience the richness and complexity of Balkan societies.
A culture in transition
While conflicts in the Balkans have receded, the region's new nation-states continue to experience dramatic transformations in their politics, societies, and economies. Realities on the ground remain challenging particularly in the areas of human rights, peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the EU accession process.
The SIT Balkans program exposes students to the dynamics of ongoing changes in the region's capital cities—Zagreb, Belgrade, and Sarajevo—as well as in smaller cities and towns including Novi-Sad, Vukovar, Banja-Luka, and Mostar. Students explore the ongoing developments in these locations, as they learn from and work with academics, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and social change activist groups to gain a firsthand perspective on the ongoing transformation of these societies.
In-country resources and program partners generally include:
- Faculty of Media and Communications (FMK), Singidunum University
- Center for Peacebuilding in Sanski Most
- Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Serbia
