Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Examine models of health systems, global health policy, international organizations (IOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Geneva. Experience the practical applications of health and development programs during an excursion to Morocco.

This program examines public health systems, health policy, and development from the international nexus of Geneva. Particular emphasis is placed on the role played by international agencies, civil society actors, and the public sector in shaping health policy and systems.

The program investigates prominent issues dominating the international health and development arena, including: healthcare interventions in complex emergencies; mental health; health security; access to medicines; and vulnerable groups such as migrants. Students also examine critical links between health, the environment, and development, focusing in particular on nutrition and water. Review program syllabi.

Onsite briefings and lectures with health and development experts
Several visits are held at prominent international and nongovernmental organizations, such as the University Hospital of Geneva, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the World Health Organization, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, and the International Organization on Migration.

The program draws on the expertise of high-profile academics, international and nongovernmental organization staff, medical professionals, and public sector officials working in the fields of development and/or health, many of whom serve as program lecturers and advisors. Comparative study in Morocco
The program’s ten-day excursion to Morocco provides students with a different vantage point in which to compare and contrast public health systems and the impact of development on health. Learn more about the program’s excursions.

The conference is sponsored by Webster University in Geneva and brings together practitioners and scholars, members of the Geneva-based international community, and other civil society officials and representatives. A note on language
The entire program is conducted in English; a limited number of lectures may be conducted in French during the excursion in Morocco, with full translation provided. No previous background in French is required.

Students with French language ability will have numerous opportunities to use their language skills. French language learning is part of the curriculum, and instruction is provided at all levels.
