Why You Should Go
This Global Seminar will have an intensive course and lecture format highlighting basic aspects of population, public health, and methods used to assess health in the population. This will be coupled with a clinical hands-on experience in dealing with these same issues in refugee populations in a developing country and how the health system and nongovernmental agencies deal with the health aspects of such refugee populations. Excursions to less populated areas will shed light on alternative health beliefs and healthcare.
The experience gained is likely to shape participants’ careers and understanding of health for years to come.
Academic Preparation and Pre-requisites
The courses taught in this program, although intended for undergraduate students, are taught at a level similar to graduate courses and are therefore more academically rigorous than other Global Seminar courses. Students who choose the program should be academically and emotionally prepared for this challenge. In addition to the standard eligibility requirements of being in good academic and disciplinary standing, this program has the following pre-requisites:
- 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred
- Previous coursework in research methods with statistics preferred
- Arabic language background helpful but not required
An interview will be part of the selection process
NOTE: Rev 160GS and Rev 165GS have been approved as upper-division electives for the new Global Health minor.
Meet the Professor:
Wael Al-Delaimy is the Chief of Global Health in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the UCSD School of Medicine and teaches graduate Global Health students. He has worked on four different continents and travelled to more than 25 countries and has a multidisciplinary approach to public health as an epidemiologist. He pioneered methods for measuring tobacco smoke using toenails and is internationally recognized in this field. He also directs the California Tobacco Survey, which is a state wide multimillion dollar project that deals with tobacco behavior and attitudes by Californians.
