India: Sustainable Development and Social Change

Homestays

Students in the India: Sustainable Development and Social Change program live with a homestay family in Jaipur for approximately six weeks. Carefully selected families all have longstanding relationships with SIT and are typically upper middle class and of various sizes and religious backgrounds. Most host families have multiple generations living under one roof and are typically located in residential neighborhoods where transportation, shopping, and Internet resources are easily accessible.

Through the homestay experience, students have an opportunity to practice language skills and share daily life, including many memorable meals, and special cultural activities — such as weddings — with a North Indian family. Many students consider the homestay experience one of the most meaningful components of the program.

The homestay experience provides students with an opportunity to share and learn about culture, customs, food, language, society, and religion by taking part in daily activities at home and with members of extended families. The homestay also gives students a sense of social change and continuity in India by focusing on changing family structure and traditions in India.

Students are matched with families based on student background, health issues, and shared interests. Typically, one student stays with a homestay family. The homes are located in close clusters within a periphery of 1 to 10 kilometers from the program center. Students typically commute together to the learning center and use the same auto rickshaw for traveling around Jaipur, thus maximizing their safety and convenience.

Other accommodations during the program include hostels, hotels, guest houses, and farm houses.
