Choose Between Two Degree Formats

Master of Arts in TESOL, On Campus
Through the full-time program, students can complete their degree in just one year. This means you pay less in tuition and start teaching sooner. The program begins in September, concludes in May, and culminates with a portfolio of learning. Learn more about the MA in TESOL, On Campus.

Master of Arts in TESOL, Low Residency
This distance-learning program offers current teachers SIT’s highly regarded TESOL graduate education—grounded in reflective practice and experiential learning—through a remote format. Students complete the majority of coursework online while staying in their current jobs and communities and enjoy two short-term (3-week) summer sessions on SIT’s beautiful campus in Vermont. Learn more about MA in TESOL, Low Residency.

Both programs lead to the same degree and include similar courses. All students develop a practice of reflection, learn through experience, and are able to situate their work in a global context. Learning is balanced in the domains of knowledge, skills, attitude, and awareness in the context of language.

Why Choose SIT for your Master of Arts in TESOL?
  • Belong to SIT's global network. Employers want teachers who have been trained at SIT. More than 3,000 alumni over the past 40 years have created a reputation you can count on.
  • Teach with a purpose. SIT prepares you to teach language for communication, self-expression, social change, advocacy, and empowerment.
  • The best teachers do more than teach. SIT programs are built on the interplay between personal experience and academic study.

SIT graduate programs utilize an experiential and reflective approach to learning developed over 80 years. SIT’s MA in teaching program has engaged in cohort-based teacher education for more than 40 years and is the oldest and largest of its kind. SIT faculty are leaders in the field of TESOL education.

Watch SIT faculty and degree chair Susan Barduhn discuss the low-residency TESOL program and her latest research in an interview with the British Council. Barduhn was a plenary speaker at the 2013 IATEFL Conference in Liverpool.
