SIT Farm and Sustainable Agriculture Initiative

Increasing food sovereignty through community based ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and education

At the SIT Graduate Institute we seek to practice what we teach. We not only envision the creation of a sustainable and just food system, both locally and globally, we are determined to build it through community-based ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and education.

For those of us at the SIT Graduate Institute, this vision is derived from a deep concern that people today either lack access to or are disconnected from the importance of nutritious food grown through sustainable agriculture methods. Current record-breaking agri-business profits, in the midst of a global food crisis, are testament to an increased threat to food security all over the world. In light of these facts, we believe that SIT students and educators must be part of the growing global movement to “relocalize” food systems in the name of food sovereignty.

With World Learning’s historic emphasis on education and a belief in local solutions, the SIT Farm & Sustainable Agriculture Initiative works through three primary channels to address food insecurity:

Local Organic Food Production
Increasing the supply of local organic produce in the Brattleboro community to help satisfy the increasing demand for food, while mobilizing our community to relocalize our food system .

Community Partnerships & Programs
Providing a practical, experiential learning environment that benefits the community by increasing local food security and increasing the community’s awareness of global food issues.

SIT Academic Program
Offering an innovative sustainable agriculture focus within the SIT Graduate Institute’s courses.
