Federal Loans for US Citizens and Permanent Residents

In addition to the grants and scholarships offered by SIT, US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a range of federal financial aid. The Federal Direct Loan Program and the Federal Perkins Loan Program are open to graduate students who meet established requirements.

Federal Direct Loan (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)
These loans are administered by SIT in cooperation with the Federal Direct Loan Program. The subsidized loan is awarded according to need, as assessed by the "need analysis process". The interest on this loan is paid, or subsidized, by the federal government during the in-school, grace, and authorized deferment periods. Depending on the amount of eligibility, a graduate student may borrow up to $8,500 per academic year.

The amount of eligibility for the unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan is based on the cost of attendance, minus your other financial aid.  The combined total of subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans is limited to $20,500 per academic year for graduate students.

Federal Perkins Loan
The Perkins Loan is awarded based on need and available funds. The typical range for this loan is $1,000-$2,000.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan and Private Education Loans
Some students choose to borrow funds in addition to the Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Direct Loan to help with their expenses while in graduate school. In most cases, the Federal Direct PLUS loan is a better choice for students.
