  • SIT offers a low-residency MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to better meet the needs of working teachers worldwide. The program is designed to meet the career goals of teachers seeking a master’s degree in EFL, ESL, ELT, and TESOL.

    Same program, new format
    This distance-learning program offers current teachers SIT’s highly regarded TESOL graduate education—grounded in reflective practice and experiential learning—through a remote format. Students complete the majority of coursework online while staying in their current jobs and communities and enjoy two short-term (3-week) summer sessions on SIT’s beautiful campus in Vermont.

    Merging theory, reflection, and practice
    Through coursework, a supervised practicum, and an Independent Professional Project, you will delve deeply into the theoretical knowledge and professional competencies that are essential for effective language teaching. The curriculum includes critical topics such as intercultural communication, practical teaching methodology, applied linguistics, curriculum design and assessment, and second language acquisition.     Supervised observation in your classroom
    During the program’s interim-year teaching practicum, an SIT faculty member or appropriate mentor will travel to your classroom to engage with you in a one-on-one format. This intensive period of mentorship is designed to support you in your professional development as a teacher by offering you reflective and interactive feedback. It is a meaningful, collaborative time to examine your work and to act purposefully to improve your effectiveness as a teacher both on your own and under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.

    Degree Sequence (34 credits):

    Year One

    • Summer (June 4 to August 15, 2014): Coursework online and a three-week session on SIT’s campus (July 26 to August 15, 2014)
    • Sept–May: Coursework online and an Interim-Year Teaching Practicum at the student’s place of employment

    Year Two

    • Summer:  Coursework online and a three-week session on SIT’s campus
    • Sept–Dec: Coursework online
    • Jan–May: Independent Professional Project (thesis)

    Program eligibility: minimum of two years of second-language teaching experience and a job teaching ESOL for the September–June period between the two summer sessions. Learn more.
