Intensive Preparation for Studies at SIT
Prior to the start of the fall semester, incoming international students can enroll in an intensive academic preparation course; the course is designed specifically for international students who wish to improve their English language and study skills before beginning the residency phase of an SIT graduate program.
The course includes but is not limited to:
- Discussion skills
- Presentation skills (formal and informal)
- Writing skills
- Intercultural communication and cultural adjustment
- US culture
- Pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar skills (addressed as needed)
Special attention is placed on grammar, academic reading and writing, note-taking strategies, class discussions, and presentations. Additionally, the course is a great opportunity to meet other international students.
Course title: Intensive Academic English Preparation
Course dates: July 30–August 17, 2012
Course length: The course runs Monday–Friday for three weeks, with 30 hours of language instruction per week. Class hours are from 9:00 AM–12:00 PM and from 1:30 PM–4:30 PM.
Housing: On-campus accommodation is available in two-person dormitory rooms. The cost for housing is $45 per day (single occupancy) and $39 per day (double occupancy). Meals are included in this price (available in the school cafeteria).
Registration deadline: July 1, 2012
Applications will be accepted after this date if space is available.

The Intensive Academic English Preparation course is available to all international students who will be entering an SIT graduate program in the fall.
Additional resources available during the academic year
- English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered at an advanced level for students for whom English is not a first language, during the academic year.
- SIT’s Language and Culture Department has writing tutors who offer support for students in need of assistance with their written work.
