Technical Specifications for Hardware/Software and Connectivity

In order to adequately participate in this program, we include the following technical standards for computer hardware and software as well as for Internet connectivity. These standards are intended to guide you while purchasing a new computer, or for assuring that your current computer has the appropriate hardware and software so you may have the best experience for this program. These are middle-tier requirements, more of any specification (RAM, processor speed, etc.) is fine, less than listed here may not be adequate. If you are planning to purchase a new computer, a laptop (portable) is recommended for ease in traveling, however a desktop to the specifications below will work fine.

Laptop Macintosh
  • Intel based iBook or Macbook or Macbook Pro (G4 and G5 based macs not recommended)
  • Bluetooth, modem and DVD/CDRW burner recommended 
  • Processor: 1400Hz or better
  • RAM: 1GB acceptable, 2 GB highly recommended
  • 80 gig hard drive
  • Wireless networking
  • Operating system: OSX 10.5 or later with Firefox browser installed
  • Working and updated antivirus software
  • Microsoft Office 2003 
Laptop PC
  • Processor: Intel 2GHz core 2 duo at 2ghz or better (or AMD Athlon x2 3400 or better)
  • RAM: 1 GB acceptable, 2GB highly recommended
  • 80 gig hard disk
  • Wireless networking
  • Bluetooth, modem, and DVD/CDRW burner recommended 
  • Operating system: Windows XP with service pack 2 highly recommended; Windows Vista is acceptable
  • Working and updated antivirus software
  • Microsoft Office 2003 
For PC and Macintosh Users
Software:
  • MS Office 2000 or later
  • Java - the latest version
  • Antivirus and anti-malware software for either PC or Macintosh
  • MS Internet Explorer 7.0 or later / Firefox 3.0 or later for web browsing
  • Instant messaging client – Microsoft Messenger (Freeware)
  • Adobe Acrobat 7 or later
  • Podcast reader such as: iTunes, Juice, Google
Connectivity:
  • Connectivity to Internet: high-speed/DSL/Cable
  • Telephone line capable of long-distance calling
  • Wireless network capability highly recommended

  • Printer: Any USB printer
