CONTACT Programs

“Through CONTACT I met peacebuilders from Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia, India, Iraq, and elsewhere.  Although I initially knew little about these places, I began to understand through the program that we are all human beings with good hearts and a willingness to make peace for a better future. What a positive experience for me! Considering the job I do, CONTACT was one of the best opportunities for me to gain knowledge, skills, and confidence in myself as a transformer of conflict and a development agent.”

SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS

  • Summer Peacebuilding Program (Vermont, USA)
SIT offers a three-week, three-credit professional development and graduate training in conflict transformation each summer on SIT’s main campus in southeastern Vermont. Participants gain knowledge and skills through experiential learning methodologies, build community through structured activities designed to increase inter-cultural understanding, and present case studies of the conflicts and challenges in their home countries. The program meets the needs of both working professionals who want to acquire new theories and practices in peacebuilding, as well as those who plan to pursue a certificate or graduate degree in conflict transformation.
  • Peacebuilding Training and Education in South Asia (Kathmandu, Nepal)
Held in Kathmandu, Nepal, this two-week program is designed to increase the capacity of individuals across South Asia to establish collaborative cross-border relationships that will contribute to conflict transformation, sustainable peace, and increased development in the region and beyond. Participants gain new skills and tools aimed to prevent inter-communal conflicts from escalating into problems that threaten regional, national, and even global security.

The programs listed above can be taken as stand-alone programs or serve as a foundational course and first step toward a graduate certificate or master’s degree.

CERTIFICATE AND MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • Low-Residency and Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation
The Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation is a one-year, part-time graduate and professional development program offering 14-16 credits. It includes two short phases of onsite instruction coupled with distance learning in order to accommodate the schedule of full-time working professionals. Requires completion of either the US or South Asia short-term program.
  • Joint Master of Arts Degree in Conflict Transformation (with Graduate Certificate)
Interested students can pursue an MA in Conflict Transformation or an MA in Service, Leadership, and Management by building on the CONTACT Graduate Certificate program. This option is designed for working professionals or others who wish to pursue a master’s degree while minimizing the amount of time away from home and career.

NOTE: SIT Graduate Institute also offers an MA in Conflict Transformation that does not involve the CONTACT program and includes a longer period of on-campus study. Click here for more information pertaining to that program.
