Massachusetts Category 4 Training: Teaching Reading and Writing to ELLs

This training has been approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education as aligned with Category 4 professional development required for Sheltered English Immersion classrooms.

This sixteen-hour professional learning experience is designed to help teachers in upper elementary classrooms (gr. 3-6) develop the skills and knowledge to promote reading, writing, and vocabulary development for English language learners in Sheltered English Immersion classrooms.

SIT has designed this training based on the findings of the National Literacy Panel, the National Staff Development Council Standards for Staff Development, and the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes.

SIT uses an inquiry-based training approach to facilitate professional learning with teachers. This active and disciplined training is organized around essential questions, and engages teachers in experiences which model student learning and draw upon teachers’ own experiences in the classroom. Through this approach, the SIT Category 4 training helps teachers to:

  1. recognize existing strategies they already use which promote reading, writing and vocabulary development for ELLs
  2. learn new strategies for developing reading, writing and vocabulary which they can incorporate into their teaching

Training requirements:

  • A school-based or district-based cohort of maximum 30 teachers
  • Two days of face-to-face training, scheduled at least one week apart
  • An application assignment to be completed individually or in grade level teams, between Day 1 and Day 2

PDPs:

Upon successful completion, participants receive 16 PDPs.
