On-Campus Student Support Services
Department of Student Services (DOSS)
Professional and personal growth of students is a dynamic process that occurs both in the academic arena and in life outside the classroom as well. The role of Student Services is to provide co-curricular support to SIT Graduate Institute students through a wide range of services and activities. Responding to the realities of these adult learners, the department has a dual mission:
- to complement the educational experience of the degree programs with a variety of learning opportunities, and
- to offer assistance with helping students meet the various non-academic challenges inherent in the graduate school experience so that they can focus on the demands of their course work.
The Student Services philosophy is one of collaboration and flexibility, taking into consideration the diverse needs and interests of our campus population.
To accomplish its mission, Student Services offers eight primary services:
- Professional (Career) Development
- Counseling Services
- Disability Support Services
- International Student & Scholar Services
- Housing On-Campus and Off-Campus
- Activities/Sport-Recreation
- World Learning Bookstore
In addition, DOSS is responsible for coordinating new student orientation as well as commencement. Other functions coordinated by Student Services include SIT Graduate Institute van transportation, childcare assistance, the operation of El Café in the Student Center, and New Student Advocacy.
The US Federal work-study program and SIT Graduate Institute student work opportunity program are coordinated by Career Services working jointly with the Office of Financial Aid.
Ultimate responsibility for leadership within the department and optimal service delivery rests with the Director of Student Services, who is also the principal financial and human resource manager for Student Services.
Although not administratively linked with the Department of Student Services, other campus services support student welfare in important ways. These include:

Student participation in campus organizations and activities help shape the growth and direction of co-curricular life at SIT Graduate Institute. Examples include:
- SIT Graduate Institute Student Association (SITSA)

- InterFaith Council
- Connections: the Diversity Advocacy Committee
- Alliance for Women and Gender Issue
- GLoBE (Gays, Lesbians or Bisexuals Everywhere)
