Skills and Topics in Conflict Transformation:
Facilitating Structured Dialogue for Youth
August 6 - 8, 2010
Dialogue is a key element in World Learning’s Youth Peacebuilding and Leadership Programs (YPLP). These programs have served close to 3,000 young leaders from over 30 countries over the past 20 years. Dialogue is focused through a structured process of reflection and interaction about topics that are relevant to each youth group, usually from communities with a history of violent conflict as in Cyprus, Rwanda, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Serbia or the Middle East.
A structured series of daily dialogue sessions creates a rare opportunity and safe context for young people to share openly and honestly about issues of common concern. A well-prepared, appropriately sequenced dialogue structure builds at atmosphere of trust and group safety that deepens interpersonal and intercultural sharing.
Structured youth dialogue includes relational, expressive, intercultural, and analytical objectives as part of developing capacities for leadership and peacebuilding. Dialogue sessions are part of a holistic approach to building a sense of social empowerment in young people. Effective dialogue requires basic communication skills training for participants as well as a capable facilitator. This one credit course will offer a balance of theoretical and experiential learning to build facilitation skills for youth leadership development.
